Frame Chaise Lounge

A long, low chaise with the airy look of a resort pool deck: an open cedar frame on slim legs, box arms on both sides, and a deep seat built from four ready-made Sunbrella cushions. You build it from 9 cedar boards cut to just four lengths, using nothing but straight cuts and screws, and not one screw head shows from the outside.

What’s in the plan

29 parts, 7 cut letters, only 4 lengths.

Building in pine
  • Pick #2 Prime boards and sight down each one. Take the straightest and grab one spare of each size.
  • Treated pine comes wet. Stack the boards flat with scrap spacers between them, out of the sun, for 2–3 weeks before you cut. Dry boards don't shrink or twist after you build.
  • Use screws labeled for treated lumber (most coated exterior screws are) and galvanized brackets.
  • Sand the faces and edges smooth, then stain once the wood is dry. A cedar-tone stain gives it the honey look in the photos.
  • Wear a dust mask when cutting and sanding treated wood, and never burn the scraps.

Estimates based on typical Home Depot prices; your store may vary. Same cuts and same steps in either wood.

Good to know

Which tools do I need?

A drill/driver, a miter saw or circular saw, a tape measure, a speed square, two clamps and a sanding block. If you own a drill and a saw, you are most of the way there.

Which cushions does it use?

Four ready-made 24 × 24 deep-seating cushions: three make the seat and one stands as the back. Hampton Bay cushions at Home Depot run about $32 each, or a Sunbrella 4-pack about $278. A non-slip rug pad underneath keeps them together.

Do I need a helper?

No. The heaviest piece is the base frame, about 25 pounds. A second pair of hands is handy when you flip it over in step 3.

What will the materials cost?

From $150 in pressure-treated pine or from $340 in cedar at Home Depot, including screws, brackets, finish and the rug pad. Cushions are extra, from about $128 for four. Prices vary by store and season. A comparable designer teak chaise typically sells for $3,000 or more.

Can I build it in pine to save money?

Yes. The plan includes a second shopping list in pressure-treated pine, with the same cuts and the same steps. It brings the build down to about $150, against $340 in cedar. Cedar is lighter, straighter and naturally weathers to a silver-honey color; pine needs a few weeks to dry and a coat of stain, but costs about a fifth as much.

Is it sturdy?

Yes. The posts are set so leaning back loads the screws sideways, the way screws are strongest, and every one of the 110 screws was checked in 3D to land in solid wood without hitting another.

Does it match the Block Lounge Chair?

It shares the same cedar, honey oil finish and linen cushions, so they sit well together. The chaise starts our airier Frame collection, and it pairs with the Frame Lounge Chair as a set.
