Ring Sofa

A low, wide outdoor sofa with the Ring chair's open rectangle sides. Each seat gets its own hidden frame, exactly like the chair's, and the frames screw together side by side, so the seat is rigid end to end and every seam stands on the floor. Standard 24-inch deep-seat cushions, 8° seat rake, straight cuts only. The plan includes both sizes: the 79½-inch sofa and the 55-inch loveseat, each with its own cut list, shopping list, PDF and 3D guide.

Building in pine
  • Pick #2 Prime boards and sight down each one. Take the straightest and grab one spare of each size.
  • Treated pine comes wet. Stack the boards flat with scrap spacers between them, out of the sun, for 2–3 weeks before you cut. Dry boards don't shrink or twist after you build.
  • Use screws labeled for treated lumber (most coated exterior screws are) and galvanized brackets.
  • Sand the faces and edges smooth, then stain once the wood is dry. A cedar-tone stain gives it the honey look in the photos.
  • Wear a dust mask when cutting and sanding treated wood, and never burn the scraps.

Estimates based on typical Home Depot prices; your store may vary. Same cuts and same steps in either wood.

Good to know

What sizes are in the plan?

Both. The 3-seat sofa is 79½ inches wide (22 boards, from $265 in pine) and the 2-seat loveseat 55 inches (19 boards, from $195). Both are 41½ inches deep including the leaning back and 29½ inches tall, with 24-inch arms.

Which cushions does it use?

One standard 24 × 24 deep-seat set per seat, bought ready-made: about $64 a seat for Hampton Bay CushionGuard, or about $112 for Sunbrella.

Does it match the Ring Lounge Chair?

Yes. Same rings, same seat height and angle, same back, and each seat is built on the same frame as the chair. Put two chairs across from the sofa for a full set.

Is a long seat going to sag or wobble?

No. Every seat has its own frame of two stringers and two stretchers, the frames are screwed together at each seam, and each seam has a foot block at the front, so the seat stands on the floor at every seam and can't rack side to side.

Which tools do I need?

A drill/driver, a miter saw or circular saw, a tape measure, a speed square, two clamps and a sanding block. Every joint is wood on wood with screws: no pocket holes, no glue-ups, no brackets.

Can I build it in pine to save money?

Yes. The plan comes with a second shopping list in pressure-treated pine, with the same cuts and the same steps. Pine needs a couple of weeks to dry and a coat of cedar-tone stain, but costs about a third as much as cedar.

Can one person build it?

Mostly. The rings and seat frames are built flat or on the floor, and every part can be lifted by one person. A second pair of hands helps when you set the joined seat frames between the rings.
