Plan OL-023 · Timber collection

Timber Lounge Chair

A low, deep lounge chair made of solid 6x6 timbers. Each arm is four timbers stacked with 8-inch screws, built upside down so every screw is hidden. The seat slats are exactly as long as the gap between the arms, so they space them for you, and the back drops in one way only. Four cut lengths, 8 boards, and every screw was checked in 3D to land in solid wood. Heavy: build it where it will live.

Building in pine
  • Pick #2 Prime boards and sight down each one. Take the straightest and grab one spare of each size.
  • Treated pine comes wet. Stack the boards flat with scrap spacers between them, out of the sun, for 2–3 weeks before you cut. Dry boards don't shrink or twist after you build.
  • Use screws labeled for treated lumber (most coated exterior screws are) and galvanized brackets.
  • Sand the faces and edges smooth, then stain once the wood is dry. A cedar-tone stain gives it the honey look in the photos.
  • Wear a dust mask when cutting and sanding treated wood, and never burn the scraps.

Estimates based on typical Home Depot prices; your store may vary. Same cuts and same steps in either wood.

Good to know

How big is it?

35 inches wide, 34½ inches deep and 22 inches tall at the arms and back. The seat sits about 17½ inches high with the cushion, a standard lounge height.

Which cushions does it use?

One standard 24 × 24 deep-seat set, bought ready-made: Home Depot's Hampton Bay CushionGuard set is about $64, or a Sunbrella set about $112. The seat is 29 inches deep, front edge to the back beam, so the set fills it. The back cushion rises above the timbers, as on most deep-seat furniture.

How heavy is it?

Very. Wet pressure-treated 6x6s weigh about 10 lb a foot, so each arm is over 100 lb in pine and about half that in cedar. Every single timber can be lifted by one person, but the finished piece can't: build it where it will live, and roll the arms upright on a moving blanket instead of lifting them.

Can I cut 6x6 timbers with ordinary tools?

Yes. A 7-1/4" circular saw cuts about 2-3/8" deep, so square a line around all four faces, cut each face, and finish the small core with a handsaw. It's slower than cutting 2x4s, so the plan has you cut one of each length first and check it.

What drives the 8-inch screws?

The plan uses FastenMaster TimberLOK screws, which come with their hex bit and need no pilot holes. FastenMaster recommends a 1/2" high-torque, low-speed drill; a strong impact driver usually works too.

Will pine timbers crack?

Pressure-treated 6x6s are sold wet, and they check (small cracks along the grain) as they dry. That's normal, doesn't weaken them, and suits the rustic look. Pick the straightest timbers in the pile and let them sit a couple of weeks before you stain.

Can I build it in pine to save money?

Yes, and in this collection pine is the usual choice: cedar 6x6s cost about three times as much and are often special order. The pine list comes to about $315, the cedar list about $745. Same cuts, same steps.
